Taking the ‘Next Step’ in Queensland - feature image, used as a supportive image and isn't important to understand article

“Thank you for putting this program on. It was very informative and a great two days to both catch up with NYSFers from my session, meet people from other sessions while learning about various areas in science and future pathways.”

Following a successful Next Step in Melbourne, students headed to Queensland to see what  the state had on offer.

Next Step is an extension of the NYSF Year 12 Program, for NYSF students to continue to expand on their knowledge of courses, facilities, scholarships and accommodation on different university campuses.

The Queensland program was jam packed with interesting and educational visits with everything from motorsport engineering with the Red Bull Racing Team to CSIRO’s Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group, The Queensland Brain Instituteand the Animal Referral Hospital to name a few.

Students also spent time at our partner university, The University of Queensland (UQ), visiting UQ Engineering, Boeing Research and Technology, and various engineering activities (including Prosthetic Limb, Water and Sanitation, Shock Tunnel).

On the first evening students heard from NYSF Partner, Lockheed Martin, about career opportunities within their organisation.

Here’s what some students said about Next Step Brisbane;

“Thank you for putting this program on. It was very informative and a great two days to both catch up with NYSFers from my session, meet people from other sessions while learning about various areas in science and future pathways.” – Penny

“It was very eye-opening as I never realised that motorsport was such an interdisciplinary industry with physicists, engineers, mechanics, commercial, business and of course the drivers. It was very fascinating to see that motorsports have a lot more work behind the scenes than just what you watch on TV.” - Jordan

“The UQ campus was enough to make me put UQ at the top of my list. It had been highly recommended by Queenslanders at NYSF but I had to see it for myself - and it exceeded my expectations.” – William

“I liked Data 61 because you got to see some really cool projects and understand that in the future you could work on projects like this. I found Defence Force Recruiting informative and the VR fun. I absolutely loved Triple Eight Racing. I had never considered motorsport as a career, I liked that the engineers were involved in the whole process. I had seriously considered engineering on small things (like implants) and big things (like buildings) but the medium size like cars I had not considered. I just found it really cool.” – Phoebe

In July Next Step will head to Canberra and Sydney for the final two programs.
