Opening the virtual doors to our Webinars for National Science Week - feature image, used as a supportive image and isn't important to understand article

This year more than ever, it was great to be able to recognise the work of scientists and researchers that are helping solve the challenges Australia has been facing

National Science Week is an Australian wide annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM). Scientists and STEM professionals from around the country connect to host events, answer hard-hitting questions, and inspire STEM learning through interactive workshops.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, like many other organisations, the NYSF went virtual to host engaging events and engage the public in a wide range of STEM topics.

To celebrate National Science Week, we showcased various webinars from the NYSF Connect Webinar Series in our Week of Webinars! We curated 14 webinars that are ordinarily exclusive to NYSF Alumni, and made them freely available to the general public.

For the NYSF Connect Webinar Series, we host a live Q&A webinar with a leading STEM professional each week. Alumni get the opportunity to ask questions about their research, career path, or anything else they might like to know. Since May, we have hosted 16 webinars with guests specialising in defence, linguistics, astrophysics, medical science, cosmology, veterinary science, and many other exciting STEM fields. We’ve also provided exclusive interviews with leaders of prestigious STEM organisations such as CEO of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation Adi Paterson, Australia’s Chief Scientist Alan Finkel AO FAA FTSE, Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist Tanya Monro FAA FTSE FOSA FAIP GAICD, and International President of Lockheed Martin Space Rod Drury CSC.

Each week we are pleased to secure such high-profile guests for our alumni, and were delighted to share these interviews with local communities around Australia for National Science Week. Throughout our extensive social media channels and messaging, we were thrilled to reach over 56,000 people with key information about these STEM professionals and their work plus provide link to their webinar. Throughout the week, we received more than 230 views of our webinars, giving all Australians access to the fascinating work of scientists and the vital role their research plays in our lives.

This year more than ever, it was great to be able to recognise the work of scientists and researchers that are helping solve the challenges Australia has been facing and continues to tackle, from bushfires to COVID-19, and all the exceptional research occurring daily.

Thank you to all the STEM professionals and organisations who have participated in our NYSF Connect Webinar Series to date. We look forward to the next few months of webinars with our 1200+ NYSF Alumni.
