The National Youth Science Forum has been very busy these past six months participating in events running all around Australia. The following events were very successful at promoting all aspects of STEM, with a strong focus on increasing the amount of women in STEM fields.

Women in Science Symposium

In early March the Women in Science Symposium was held at the beautiful National Maritime Museum in Sydney, celebrating women in science and encouraging year 10 to 12 girls to consider a career in this field. This event highlighted the amazing opportunities a science career holds, while encouraging girls to break the classic white lab-coat stereotype science is renowned for. Attendees were given the opportunity to mingle with NYSF alumni, discuss their experiences with the NYSF, and most importantly, share their passion for science.

Speed-Date-a-Scientist

Later in March, NYSF hosted a “speed-date-a-scientist” event as part of the World Science Festival in Brisbane. This was an incredibly fun event that gave students in year 10 to 12 the opportunity to speak with NYSF alumni and discover the broad range of scientific fields available and the future opportunities a career in science holds. It was their chance to meet a chemist with an element of surprise; a biologist with designer genes; and an electrical engineer with an extra big hertz… sorry heart!

Ecolinc Women in STEM Conference

Each year, Ecolinc runs two Women in STEM programs, and this year with the help of Toyota Australia, they ran a two day Women in STEM conference for year 9 and 10 girls attending government schools in Melbourne’s western suburbs. This conference inspired young girls to consider a STEM career, and broaden their minds about the endless possibilities for women. The students also listened to a range of wonderful female role models speak about their experiences in STEM. The NYSF alumni volunteering at the conference found it inspiring and were successful at engaging with many students, who may turn out to be the next cohort of the NYSF Year 12 Program!
