Meet the Session B Communication Interns - feature image, used as a supportive image and isn't important to understand article

Meet Max and Maddy, this year’s Communications Interns for Session B. During their time in Brisbane they’ll accompany students on their STEM site visits, keeping you up to date with the program!

Both being NYSF alumni and enthusiastic in the field of communication, Max and Maddy had similar motivations in applying for this position. For Max who works in communication at La Trobe University, the opportunity to support the NYSF’s communications team was one which he knew he had to jump at. Science communication has always been a long-term career goal for Maddy, who studies science and journalism at the University of Queensland, and the opportunity to gain experience in the field was simply too good to pass up.

Throughout the next ten days, Max and Maddy hope to gain incredible hands on experience and insight into the world of science communication. Max hopes that the experience will aid him in refining his event coverage skills, specifically photo and video coverage of various STEM visits, and opening & closing ceremonies. He hopes that this internship will enhance his abilities to work in environments where he is under the stress of tight timing, learning how to better manage his time and prioritise tasks, as well as strategically thinking about which events will best serve the goals of the communications plan. Hoping to enter a career involving both science and the communication of it to a wider audience, Maddy hopes the experience will enlighten her on what a career in science communication could potentially hold. She hopes that through meeting people and experts at visits and events such as partners day she can also network and develop her skills in communicating science to the people around her through social media.

While working alongside the student staff leaders, both interns hope to improve their skills in inter-team communication and logistical management processes. Although the personal gains will be astounding for them, they are both hoping to provide the NYSF with as much support as they can. Acting as liaisons between the NYSF and the wider public, both the interns look forward to sharing an insight into the student experience while attending NYSF whilst utilising their photography and videography skills to provide the external communications team with assets which can be used throughout the remainder of the year.

Both Max and Maddy are incredibly excited to be able to share the next two weeks of NYSF with you, stay tuned!
