NYSF’s new CEO announced - feature image, used as a supportive image and isn't important to understand article

"Melanie was chosen in a competitive selection process from a strong field of candidates. We are delighted to have a person of Melanie’s calibre as our new CEO and the first woman to be at the helm of the NYSF.”

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Melanie Bagg as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), following an extensive recruitment process.

Melanie will commence in the role on 22 July replacing Dr Damien Pearce, who is leaving the NYSF after six years as CEO.

Melanie is currently the Director, Communications and Outreach at the Australian Academy of Science and has a BSc, a BHSc (Hons) and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Adelaide. A graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course, Melanie brings over 15 years experience in STEM management, science communication, outreach, publishing and media for the not-for-profit and higher education sectors.

During her time at the University of Adelaide, Melanie was integral to the University partnering with the NYSF and has been responsible for the delivery of NYSF activities both in South Australia and Canberra. Melanie also has close ties to the NYSF Alumni network and has established collaborative relationships with many Alumni and their organisations.

In 2016 Melanie was awarded the Unsung Hero of SA Science Communication for her commitment to translating complex science into something we can all understand. Recently, Melanie has overseen the establishment of a video production and distribution capability at the Australian Academy of Science, connecting over 1.5 million people with evidence based science on Facebook alone.

Andrew Metcalfe AO, Chairman of the NYSF said:

“On behalf of the board I would like to welcome Dr Melanie Bagg to the NYSF. Melanie was chosen in a competitive selection process from a strong field of candidates. We are delighted to have a person of Melanie’s calibre as our new CEO and the first woman to be at the helm of the NYSF.”

“Melanie is a proven leader with extensive experience in the STEM education and outreach arena. With her track record and passion, Melanie is uniquely qualified to lead the NYSF successfully into the future.”

“I’d again like to congratulate and thank Damien on his stewardship of the NYSF as the CEO over the last few years. The organisation has grown and succeeded in its mission under his leadership.”

Reflecting on her appointment, Melanie said:

“I am honoured to be given the opportunity to lead the NYSF, a long-standing organisation with a vision and purpose strongly aligned with my own.”

“I firmly believe that STEM literacy does change lives and am proud to be championing the cause in all its forms. I am looking forward to working with the NYSF team to continue to deliver immersive and transformative youth-led experiences to young Australians to help them value science and have a level of STEM literacy throughout their lives,” she said.

Please join us in welcoming Melanie Bagg as the incoming CEO.

We would like to thank our partners and stakeholders for their ongoing support as the NYSF continues to develop and grow.
