Alumnus Declan Clausen appointed Deputy Lord Mayor - feature image, used as a supportive image and isn't important to understand article

"As an alumnus of the NYSF, I know the value it plays in opening doors for young people across Australia in engineering, science and innovation,” he said.

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is very proud of its fabulous alumni and Newcastle City Councillor, Declan Clausen is no exception.

Declan, who attended the NYSF in 2010, has become the youngest person to be named Newcastle city’s Deputy Lord Mayor.

The recent appointment followed his election in 2015 to the Newcastle City Council, being the youngest candidate to be elected at 22!

Declan’s work with the council focuses on Newcastle’s Smart City strategy, environment and sustainability measures and issues in his ward.

His passion and expertise in these fields stem from his qualifications in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Environmental), Environmental Engineering and a Bachelor of Science (BSc), Sustainable Resource Management from the University of Newcastle.

An advocate for the NYSF, Cr Clausen knows first-hand the benefits students can gain from the NYSF program.

"As an alumnus of the NYSF, I know the value it plays in opening doors for young people across Australia in engineering, science and innovation,” he said.

"As a region we have been very fortunate to have been so well represented at NYSF in the past, and I strongly encourage young Novocastrians in Year 11 to apply to attend NYSF.”

Declan’s support was instrumental in assisting the NYSF to organise a reception in Newcastle in February this year, acknowledging the Hunter region’s students who attended NYSF 2017.
