I now have friends all over Australia: Jasmine, NYSF 2018 participant - feature image, used as a supportive image and isn't important to understand article

"I really didn’t want to spend all holidays bored!"

Jasmine Green is in year 12 at Gosford High School, and attended the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in January 2018. She originally found out about the NYSF Year 12 program through her school’s careers adviser’s newsletter.

“I decided to apply for several reasons,” she says. “It sounded like an amazing experience both academically and socially. I had never been to the Australian National University, and was already considering it as a potential university choice and I really didn’t want to spend all holidays bored! Oh and of course I’m a huge science nerd!”

Jasmine says that she was able to gain a lot of different experiences from attending the NYSF. “I visited labs and heard uni lectures, was a part of a videoconference with CERN, and had a lecture from Nobel laureate Professor Brian Schmidt. I also gained a lot of independence and confidence in my own abilities to socialise, network and develop my own understanding of the world, as I’d never before spent 12 days away from home. And I now have friends all over Australia.”

“I would definitely recommend NYSF to all students with an interest in science or engineering. To spend 12 days with other young people just as enthusiastic (and dare I say odd) as you are is a remarkable thing.”

“Aside from the obvious academic attributes the NYSF is really a gathering of people who become part of an extended family of alumni across Australia and beyond.”

Applications for the NYSF 2019 Year 12 Program close on 17 June 2018 for the January 2019 program. Information is available at www.nysf.edu.au
