The 2024 NYSF Year 12 Program Chiefs of Staff. From left to right: Nora and Thomas

NORA

I never knew that I would go bananas over a science program I participated in as a year 12 student, but look at me now, NYSF is still a really important part of my life!

Hi - I am Nora! One of the Chiefs of Staff for the 2024 NYSF Year 12 Program! I am a Sydney-sider and I am currently in my last year of studying Forensic Science at UTS, and I am a lover of forensics (of course), biology, animals and musicals (I could talk for days about these things)! I joined the NYSF family in 2020, and since then, I have met some of the most amazing and knowledgeable STEM nerds and learned so much, not just about STEM but about my passion and dreams as I look towards a future in forensics. Being a Staffie, after my first year as a student participant allowed me to help others share their passions and make life-long friends.

As the 2024 program rolls around, my advice for new NYSFers is to first, apply for the program, then be brave and get out of your comfort zone to make new friends.  Learn from every expert you get to talk to! You might discover that your passion is something you’ve known since you were 5 or something you may discover whilst attending the program! Every moment in the program is a valuable one and is very special so you won’t regret applying and attending the 2024 NYSF program!

THOMAS

My name is Thomas Lymburn and I am extremely excited to be a part of the NYSF once again as one of the Chiefs of Staff for the 2024 NYSF Year 12 Program!

Outside of the NYSF I am studying a Bachelor of Science Advanced, studying microbiology, immunology and biochemistry and hoping to pursue research and eventually take my science studies into a science communication role, in which I can try to pass on some of the inspiring things I have had the opportunity to learn and discover about the world around us through science.

My NYSF student session, nearly 4 years ago now, was an experience I will never forget. I have never felt as welcomed into an experience than I was at the NYSF, surrounded by like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds from across Australia. I made friends I am still in contact with today and had my mind opened to the variety of STEM opportunities available today. My time at the NYSF eventually shaped the degree I would go into and the pathway that I am pursuing today!

My final note to the students who are considering applying for the 2024 NYSF session is that the NYSF is a place for everyone to flourish. From the people you will spend time with and get to know, or the places and things you will get to do, they will both challenge you to learn and grow as a person, while making lifelong memories with people that may just become your lifelong friends.
