NYSF International Program
Participating organisations in the 2017 NYSF International Program
National University of Singapore Science Summer Camp (NUS SSC)
The National University of Singapore (NUS) annual science summer camp program offers an inspiring series of lectures and laboratory sessions conducted by experienced university professors, which will help students to discover their passion and potential in the field of science and technology. The camp will include visits to NUS’s state-of-the-art research centres for experiential learning in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. This program provides an excellent opportunity to interact and network with students from various countries and make new friends in the Asia region, as well as experience tours and excursions to top tourist destinations in Singapore.
Students on this program are accompanied by an NYSF chaperone.

Research Science Institute (RSI)
The RSI (operated by the Center for Excellence in Education in Washington, DC) is held each year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, one of the world’s highest ranked universities. Competition for a place at the RSI is fierce and strictly limited. Australia, represented exclusively through NYSF, has two places out of a total of 75. What sets this program apart is its six -week duration and in that time the RSI participants conduct research in a field of their choice with top scientists and engineers as mentors. The doors that this experience opens are second to none. This is an incredibly intensive but rewarding program. Applicants should be aware that there may be a moderate amount of work that needs to be done before travelling to the U.S.
Important: if you are intending to apply for the Research Science Institute program you must submit your application by 11:59pm on Sunday 12 February 2017. The RSI organisers require information on our successful applicants earlier than other programs, hence the earlier due date. You can still list other programs as lower preferences; if you are not chosen for RSI your application will be considered for other programs along with all others.
Students travel to RSI unaccompanied; there is no NYSF chaperone on this program.

Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS)
This is a new addition to the NYSF International Program in 2017. The Michigan Math and Science Scholars program is designed to offer a pre-college/university experience. Students will be exposed to the breadth of science research at the University of Michigan, one of the top universities in the United States. All students stay on-campus at the University of Michigan in dorms, and have access to a great range of athletic and leisure facilities. Students also have the option to participate in group trips in and around Ann Arbor.
Once selected, students can choose from a range of classes taught by University of Michigan professors. A list of the 2017 classes on offer is available at www.math.lsa.umich.edu/mmss/courses/courses.php; NYSF students will be attending Session 1 only.
What’s included: return airfares to Detroit, Michigan from your nearest major airport, internal transfers to Ann Arbor, Michigan, MMSS program fees (covers accommodation and meals), comprehensive travel insurance. Some meals away from the program, or optional activities, may not be included in the program cost.

International Science Summer School Heidelberg (ISSSH)
The ISSSH is similar to the RSI in that both are research-based. However, this program is four weeks in duration and the 27 students attending are hosted by the city of Heidelberg in Germany. This historic city is home to some of the world’s finest research institutes such as the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the Max Planck Institutes for Astronomy, Medical Research, and Nuclear Physics. NYSF’s three Australian students join students from Europe, Asia and North America for the program.
Students travel to ISSSH unaccompanied; there is no NYSF chaperone on this program.

London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF)
The LIYSF has been running for more than 50 years and attracts over 300 students from almost 60 countries for a two-week session. The NYSF is the exclusive partner organisation in Australia for the LIYSF. Hosted by Imperial College in South Kensington, the students attend lectures by high-profile scientists and see some of the finest research labs in the UK. There are optional visits to Oxford and Cambridge and debates on controversial issues not to mention the chance to join an instant global network.
At the end of the main LIYSF program students have the option to spend an extra week in Europe, travelling to Paris and Geneva to visit CERN and other scientific sites (this optional trip will run from 9 August until 15 August, and will incur additional cost).
Students on this program are accompanied by an NYSF chaperone; however, the chaperone does not travel with students attending the optional CERN visit at the end of LIYSF.

XLAB International Science Camp (XLAB)
NYSF students attended XLAB for the first time in 2016, and the program received rave reviews. Every summer since 2004 XLAB has organised two International Science Camps. Run in Göttingen in Germany, XLAB is hosted on the science campus of Georg August University and affiliated institutes and research organisations. The program is open to students aged 17 to 22 who are currently at high school or in the early years of their undergraduate degrees. Courses are offered in biology, chemistry and physics, and students get to do a range of hands on advanced experiments in small groups. There are also a range of excursions and social activities.
Students travel to XLAB unaccompanied; there is no NYSF chaperone on this program.
