I’m excited to be back at NYSF to learn more about different sciences, and to get more experience in science communication

Meet the 2018 Session C Communications Interns! - content imageWhat better way to start our NYSF 2018 Session C updates than with a brief overview of your favourite Communications Interns?! Our names are Catriona and Aashritha, and we are two NYSF alumni both from Melbourne who are super excited to make our dream of reliving NYSF come true (and hopefully keep you all updated in the process!).

Catriona
Hiya folks! I’m Catriona, and I attended NYSF in 2011, followed by AYSF – the Asia-
Pacific version. I completed a Bachelor of Science and Diploma in Japanese at The University of Melbourne, was crazy enough to embark on a PhD in immunology at the Peter Doherty Institute (which I’m halfway through), in which I’m researching the unlikely pair of skin allergy and tuberculosis.

I enjoy teaching science, and demonstrate in practical classes for undergraduate immunology
students and at the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC), a biology-focused learning
centre for students in grades 5-12. I also had my science communication debut as a finalist in
the Melbourne University’s 3 Minute Thesis Competition, and have since been a social media
ambassador for the Australasian Society for Immunology and will be writing for the
Convergence Science Network this year. I’m excited to be back at NYSF to learn more about
different sciences, and to get more experience in science communication, which is what I
hope to do in the future.

In my down-time, if I have any, you may find me singing with the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra Chorus, running, or curled up with a book.

Aashritha
Hi team! I'm Aashritha and I was an attendee of the NYSF in 2014. My NYSF experience
was such a blast that I'm back for Round 2! I am about to head in to my fourth year
of an Arts/Law (Hons) degree.  Through the Arts component of my undergrad, I have taken an interest in journalism which has made me particularly aware of how necessary (and cool!) science communication is.

In my spare time, I tutor English, write for an online publication, co-host a community radio
show, sing, dance, read, run and watch documentaries and like learning about random things.
Aashritha and Catriona will be documenting the lab visits, lectures, and workshops, so stay
tuned to hear all about the fun facts and new discoveries as the students are initiated into
NYSF 2018 Session C!
